Brussels (VNA) – Two parliamentarians from the Party of European Socialists namely Eric Andrieu and Marc Tarabella have announced that they will request the establishment of a commission of inquiry on the US chemical group Monsanto.

The US agrochemical giant, which specialises in manufacturing glyphosate - a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide (Roundup), has been supervised by European parliamentarians for the past few weeks, after the release of the Monsanto Files.

Earlier, in the middle of March, the US federal agencies released hundreds of Monsanto’s internal emails proving that the company should have known the toxic level of Roundup weed killer since 1999.

The parliamentarians, who are also members of the European Commission on Agriculture, have sent a letter to President of the European Commission Jean Claude-Juncker, asking him not to renew the authorisation of glyphosate in the European Union.

They expressed their hope to establish an inspection commission on Monsanto and called for specific punishment against the US group.

Eric Andrieu said the establishment of such a commission will help expand the scope of investigation to other dangerous products.

The International Monsanto Tribunal has found that Monsanto is guilty of ecocide, which has left long-term consequences on the ecosystem of various nations, including Vietnam.

The conclusion was delivered by five international judges in The Hague, the Netherlands, on April 18 after six months of investigation and two days of testimony.

Once being among producers of Agent Orange/dioxin for the US army during wartime in Vietnam, the biotech giant now produces pesticides and genetically modified plants.

The judges said Monsanto has engaged in practices which have negatively impacted the human rights to a healthy environment, food and health.-VNA
