A national conference on hand-foot-mouth (HFM) disease is taking place in Hanoi, aimed to share information and experiences in fighting the disease, which claimed the lives of 45 people in the country in 2012 and has been developing in a complex manner so far this year.
More than 20 reports are to be delivered to the two-day event, which opened on April 4 by the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Vietnam.
Specialists from Japan, the US, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia and international organisations were invited to present the disease situation, preventive measures and treatment, and vaccine research and development, which would lead to the establishment of partnerships in combating the disease at regional and global scales.
Addressing the meeting, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long said Vietnam is interested in seeking effective methods to deal with the newly-emerging disease, which was first identified in Ho Chi Minh City in 2003 and is spreading speedily in regional countries and localities in the country due to the absence of vaccine for it.
Long reported that the country recorded 157,654 HFM cases with 45 fatalities in 2012.
So far this year, the disease has been contracted by 14,260 people and four of whom died.
The Health Ministry is closely watching the development of the disease and constantly updating treatment procedures for it.-VNA
