A 20km section of the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway opened to traffic on January 2.

The section of the expressway runs from the Eastern Ring Road (also called the Second Ring Road) in Ho Chi Minh City 's District 9 to National Highway 51 in neighbouring Dong Nai province.

Mai Tuan Anh, director of the Vietnam Expressway Company, the investment owner, said the section of expressway will shorten the distance between Ho Chi Minh City and Long Thanh from 45km to 22km, and between Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau from 120km to 95km.

Traffic will be able to travel between 60 and 100km per hour on the newly-opened section, paying a minimum of 2,000 VND per kilometre.

The Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay expressway is 55km long, connecting the southern hub of Ho Chi Minh City with National Highway 51, Long Thanh International Airport and National Highway 1A. It is estimated to be completed by 2015.

It requires a total investment of about 20.630 trillion VND (nearly 978.3 million USD). Capital will come from loans provided by the Asian Development Bank, official development assistance loans from the Japanese Government and capital from the Vietnamese Government.-VNA
