Facebook said on January 31 that it will block foreign electoral ads in Thailand in the run-up to the country’s election scheduled on March 24.

The social media site said it will help protect the election in Thailand by banning all electoral ads run by advertisers based outside the country.

New regulations are expected to take effect in mid-February and will apply to foreign ads that contain references to politicians, parties, getting out the vote, and/or election suppression.

Ads with political slogans and party logos will also be blocked.

The ban will be applied not only in Thailand but also many other countries, according to Katie Harbath, Facebook’s director of global politics and government outreach.

Thailand has about 52 million monthly Facebook users.-VNA
