First colour photos capturing Hanoians’ material and spiritual lives from 1914 – 1917 are being showcased at an exhibition that was opened in France’s capital of Paris on September 15.

The 60 pictures, taken by French photographer Leon Busy, depict the daily life and crafts of people in Hanoi and its vicinity.

They are part of a 100-year collection grouping more than 1,500 colour photos ordered by French banker and philanthropist Albert Kahn with the aim of building an archive of all countries around the world. This archive is now curated at the Albert Kahn Museum.

Opening the exhibition, Benoit Paumier, General Commissioner of the 2014 Vietnam Year in France, spoke highly of both artistic and scientific values of the photos as giving viewers an insight into Vietnam’s life a century ago.

Michel Bock, a representative of Ile-de-France region which includes Paris, described the exhibition as a practical contribution to the success of the Vietnam Year in France as well as the friendship between Ile-de-France and Hanoi.

The exhibition, also held in Hanoi on December 2013, was initiated by French historian Emmanuel Poisson and Vietnamese ethnologist Dinh Trong Hieu.-VNA
