Japan will host the first summit between its leaders and those from five Mekong sub-region countries in November.

According to the Japanese Government’s spokesman Kazuo Kodama, the meeting aims to promote regional association.

The initiative was put forth by Japanese PM Yukio Hatoyama at the ASEAN-Japan summit held in Cha-am-Hua Hin, Thailand on Oct. 24.

As scheduled, the summit between Japan and Mekong-sub region countries, including Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia, will be held from Nov. 6 to 7 with focus on development programmes and projects in the region.

Kodama said Japan’s intention to cooperate with Mekong sub-region countries in the framework of Japan-ASEAN is to boost development in the region and narrow development gap between former and new ASEAN members, including Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam./.
