Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen inaugurated the country’s first thermal power plant in Preah Sihanouk province on February 25.

The 100-MW plant is capable of generating 753 million kWh per year and its all power will be sold to the national electricity company.

With a total investment of 195 million USD from the Cambodian Energy Limited, a subsidiary of Malaysia's Leader Universal Holdings Berhad, the coal-fuelled plant was built under a 33-year build-own-operate contract.

At the inaugural ceremony, PM Hun Sen said the work will contribute to the country’s economic development and poverty reduction while increasing the supply of electricity and cutting reliance on oil-fuelled power.

According to the Electricity Authority of Cambodia’ statistics, about 2.26 million households in the country or nearly 50 percent of its whole population of 14.8 million counted in 2013 have access to electricity.

Last year, the country’s available power supply was 1,370 MW, up 67 percent from 2012.

All villages are expected to access electricity by 2020 and at least 70 percent of the households by 2030.-VNA
