Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnam Fisheries Trade Union (VFTU) has opposed an attack on a Vietnamese fishing boat by vessels of Taiwan (China) in Vietnam’s waters.

According to Huynh Van Trung, chairman of the VFTU’s chapter in Duy Xuyen district, central Quang Nam province, local fishing vessel QNg 90649 TS was attacked by two Taiwanese (China) patrol boats - PP 10052 and PP 10053 - on January 6.

The Vietnamese ship was anchored at a position about 4 nautical miles to the east of Son Ca Island in Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spartly) Archipelago.

The Taiwanese boats used water cannons to spray water at the Vietnamese ship’s cabin. Vessel PP 10052 rammed the right side of ship QNg 90649, damaging its cabin and sonar equipment, Trung said.

The VFTU condemned such wrongdoings and asked the Taiwanese side to investigate the case and compensate the Vietnamese fishermen.

The union also demanded Taiwan prevent any similar actions to avoid affecting the friendship between Vietnam and Taiwan as well as the livelihoods of Vietnamese fishermen.-VNA
