The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the US , the European Union and other countries across the world have announced that they will send observers to the upcoming elections in Myanmar.

In the talks between ASEAN Secretary Surin Pitsuwan and Myanmar President U Thein Sein last month, the two sides agreed that Myanmar acceptance for foreign observers to attend its elections represented the transparency of the election process.

The elections are scheduled to be carried out in 48 areas across the country to select 48 parliamentarians.

At present, more than 150 candidates from 19 political parties are set to contest the by-elections.

The results of the by-elections will be released within a week of the elections.-VNA
