A ceremony was held in Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre on January 10 to commemorate Milo Roten, Vice President of the Austria-Vietnam Friendship Association and a great friend of Vietnam, who passed away on July 25, 2012.

His ashes were scattered in a Mekong River’s tributary which crosses Tan Phu commune in Chau Thanh district, Ben Tre province, as he wished.

Born in 1935 in Switzerland and having worked for Terre des Hommes in Germany, Roten’s life is closely attached to Vietnamese nation and people.

In 1970, he established the Bad Oeynhausen educational centre in Vietnam to care for young Vietnamese people injured during the war.

After the war in Vietnam in 1975, he took over various Terre des hommes projects in the country, many of which benefit children and Agent Orange victims.

According to statistics, more than 6,000 Vietnamese people, mostly children, have benefited from Terre des hommes’ projects.

In Ben Tre where Roten spent 24 years of his life and described as his second homeland, he participated in numerous support projects for the province, such as building kindergartens, healthcare stations and schools.

At the ceremony, Milo Roten was honoured with Frienship Order by the President.

On the occasion, the organisation board inaugurated a dining-room of Luong Hoa kindergarten, which is built with funds from Roten’s family. -VNA
