Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister  Anwar Ibrahim will seek to return to politics by participating in a local election next month to become a lawmaker.

Anwar, 71, is a member in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) alliance which won a shock election victory in May, is expected to win the by-election on October 13 after Danyal Balagopal Abdullah from the People's Justice Party quit parliament last week.

He needs to be elected to parliament to qualify to succeed Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

Earlier, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, 93, pledged to step down after two years and hand over the country's leadership to Anwar Ibrahim, who was sacked in September 1998 as Deputy PM by then PM Mahathir.

Following the May election, Anwar received a royal pardon to allow his release from prison at the request of Prime Minister Mahathir.-VNA
