Former US President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn attended a ceremony to build 32 houses for poor people in Dong Xa village, Binh Giang district of the northern province of Hai Duong.

Addressing the ceremony on Nov. 18, President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) Vu Xuan Hong welcomed the visit by the Former President and his wife and their participation in the house construction programme for poor families in Dong Xa village.

Carter said he was happy to attend the programme and that he has been involved in the non-governmental organisation Habitat for Humanity International for 26 years. The project has built or rehabilitated nearly 300,000 houses, sheltering more than 1,500,000 people around the world.

In Vietnam , Habitat for Humanity is collaborating with Vietnamese partners in house construction as well as community-based projects on clean water and environmental hygiene.

The organisation has previously carried out projects in the northern provinces of Hai Duong and Vinh Phuc, the southern provinces of Kien Giang, Tien Giang and Dong Nai and in Ho Chi Minh City . It also plans to expand its activities in other parts of Vietnam./.
