Hanoi (VNA) - French Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Development Jean-Marc Ayrault arrived in the Myanmar capital of Nay Pyi Taw on June 16 on a three-day visit to Myanmar, announced the French Embassy in Yangon on June 17.

The minister’s trip is the first by a French government representative since Myanmar's new government took office.

The visit is said to aim at renewing the support of the French government for the democratic transition in Myanmar and establishing the new foundation of bilateral relations between the two countries, especially through French development aid and the financial involvement of the French Development Agency for the years ahead.

The French official will meet President U Htin Kyaw and his Myanmar counterpart Aung San Suu Kyi during the visit.

The French Foreign Minister will also meet with Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and Chief Minister of the Yangon Region U Phyo Min Thein as well as French NGOs, Myanmar civil society organisations and French companies.-VNA
