The Cambodian Government and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) signed an agreement on September 6 to protect the Angkor Wat Temple complex.
The deal was agreed to by Cambodia ’s Deputy Prime Minister Sok An and UNESCO Representative to Cambodia Anne Lemaistre.
After the signing ceremony, Sok An said that the project will cost 250,000 USD, including 200,000 USD provided by the Italian government and 50,000 USD coming from the Cambodian government.
He said that the Italian government, through UNESCO, has been involved in helping protect the Angkor Wat Temple complex since 1994.
According to the Cambodian official, the country has also been working with 14 countries and 28 international organisations to put into action 60 different projects to preserve and restore the temple.
Located in Siem Reap province, the Angkor Wat Temple complex was first recognised as a world heritage site in December 1992 and is one of Cambodia’s most popular tourism destinations.-VNA
