More than 48 billion VND has been injected into a scheme to assist Khmer ethnic minority people in the Mekong delta province of Vinh Long over the 2008-2010 period.

The main aim of the funding is to meet the Khmer people’s increased demands for suitable housing and land for crops as well as generating jobs in a bid to improve their living conditions and spiritual life.

During the 2005-2007 period, Vinh Long invested more than 44.6 billion VND for this purpose.

The province built 2,780 houses for Khmer people at a cost of more than 19.4 billion VND.

It also spent 17 billion VND on building four water supply stations to serve 7,000 households, including 4,500 Khmer families, in Tra On, Tam Binh and Binh Minh districts.

With sponsorship from non-governmental organisations, another five water supply stations worth 3.4 billion VND have been built in the province.

As a result, 70 percent of Khmer families in the province now have access to safe water./.
