Berlin (VNA) – A large Vietnamese expat community in Germany’s Lichtenberg borough contributed significantly to local economic growth, Mayor Birgit Monteiro said in a meeting with Vietnamese Ambassador Doan Xuan Hung.

The Dong Xuan shopping mall and outstanding academic performance of Vietnamese German students at Barnim High School are two examples of the communities’ successful integration, she noted.

The mayor stressed Vietnam’s cooperation potential, saying her district wants to boost ties with Vietnamese localities moving forward.

Ambassador Hung expressed his hope for further support from Lichtenberg authorities toward his fellow countrymen here.

He lauded cooperation between Lichtenberg and Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem district in health care, cultural exchange, education and environment.

The Vietnam Embassy in Germany is willing to do its utmost to assist the two localities with join projects in the near future, Hung said.

The sides also discussed the realisation of the pact.

Lichtenberg is home to 4,000 Vietnamese expatriates. The country is home to a total of 20,000 Vietnamese.-VNA
