An estimated 17 were killed and 18 others injured after an armed group fired into a crowd at a party in Torreon city, Coahuila State, Mexico, on July 18.

The Coahuila law office said gunmen loaded in five cars fired at the crowd and more than 200 shells of AK-47 machine guns, a favourite weapon of drug gangs, were found scattered at the scene.

Mexican officials said the death toll could increase as a number of the injured are in a critical condition.

Most of the victims are between 20 and 38 years old, they said.

The cause for the crime has not yet been determined and investigations are underway.

It was considered a bloodshed week in Mexico as the number of people killed in offences reached 50, mostly in northern states.

Although the Mexican Government has deployed some 50,000 soldiers to supress gangsters of organised or drug-related crime since December, 2006, the number of armed attacks has continued to rise, taking more than 24,000 lives./.
