General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Nguyen Phu Trong has urged the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang to maintain solutions for economic growth while surmounting shortcomings and limitations in socio-economic development.

The Party leader announced the requirement while presiding over a working session between the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat and the Standing Board of the Ha Giang provincial Party Committee in Hanoi on September 10.

The meeting aims to review the province’s implementation of the 11 th National Party Congress’s Resolution and the 15th provincial Party Congress’s Resolution as well as its 2020 socio-economic development plan.

While acknowledging the locality’s performance in deploying the two resolutions over the past two and a half years, General Secretary Trong asked Ha Giang to bring out its potential and advantages to fulfil set targets.

He commented on the province’s potential in a range of areas such as agro-forestry, services, border gate economy, tourism, herbal plants, husbandry, hydro-electricity and minerals.

The Party chief asked the locality to pay more attention to the infrastructure system, electricity, transport, schools, health clinics, markets, human resources development, education and training, especially vocational training and on-the-spot job generation.

Ha Giang needs to mobilise all resources and enhance its ties with other provinces, he said, highlighting the locality’s policies towards ethnic groups and the great national unity.

Referring to national defence and security, General Secretary Trong considered Ha Giang as geographically important and urged the province to closely combine socio-economic development with national security and defence.

The province should attach importance to border security while giving more care to ethnic minorities in remote and far-flung areas and those in special difficulty, he said.

Ha Giang was also requested to accelerate the building of the Party and the political system.

During the 2011-2013 period, Ha Giang maintained a good economic growth rate with gross domestic product ( GDP ) reaching 10.35 percent on average.

Apart from achievements in building new-style rural areas, the province’s socio-economic infrastructure has been improved significantly.

The province made primary school education universal in 2011 and the rate of poor households was cut from 41.8 percent in 2010 to 30.1 percent at the end of 2012.

The province has strived to escape from the position as the nation’s poorest locality to become a national tourism centre which houses Vietnam’s first geo-park Dong Van Stone Plateau.-VNA
