A project to build Ha Long into a smoke-free tourist city started in Ha Long city, northern coastal Quang Ninh province on Sept. 26.

The three-year project is intended to disseminate information on the harmful effects of smoking and second-hand smoke in the community and enforce the implementation of regulations on smoking ban in public and work places.

Ha Long city, home to the World Natural Heritage of Ha Long Bay, was chosen by the US organisation “Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids” for the 284,500 USD project, which will be carried out by the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations’ Community Development Assistance and Research Centre.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) hailed the building of a smoke-free city as a practical activity to implement the World Health Organisation (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, to which Vietnam is a member./.
