Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has called on authorities of the northern city of Hai Phong to utilise its internal might to develop the city into a modern port-based industrial and services city by 2015.

The Party leader made the appeal following his emphasis on the important role and strategic location of the city as a socio-economic hub for the country and region, an engine driving economic growth in the key northern economic zone and the 100-year-old sea gateway.

He made these remarks on July 11 at a working session with key municipal officials as part of his ongoing visit to Hai Phong city aimed at reviewing its implementation of the socio-economic development and Party building tasks.

The Party leader applauded the city’s Party Committee, authorities and people for their efforts in bringing to life the Party Central Committee’s resolutions to reach its socio-economic development targets.

In recent years, despite economic hardship nationwide, Hai Phong has maintained an annual growth rate 1.6 times higher than the national average. Average per capital income is over 2,000 USD per annum, compared with the national figure of 1,500 USD.

Port-based tourism and services have shown strong growth. The Cat Ba island district with a population of 30,000 receives 1.3 million tourists every year. The city’s social, educational and cultural faces have also been lifted with the rate of poor households reduced to just over three percent.

Regarding Party building, he noted that Hai Phong is among localities giving due attention to the resolution on Party building issued at the fourth conference of the 11 th Party Central Committee, in which, initial results show that perceptions of the city’s Party members and cadres have changed.

At the same time, the Party leader remains concerned about the city’s failure to bring into full play its untapped potential and competitive advantages.

To address the remaining issues, he asked local authorities to devise appropriate measures to mobilise all resources for stronger development.

During the session, local authorities put on the table several proposals relating to the construction of Lach Huyen international port, the development of Bach Long Vi island into a fishing logistics centre and Party building in economic groups and state corporations.-VNA
