Hai Phong (VNA) – A symposium that aims to promote cooperation to address climate change impacts in the Red River Delta was held in Hai Phong on February 24 and 25.
The second Red River Delta Climate Change Symposium was organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) with support from the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
The two-day event drew the participation of researchers and representatives of international development partners and Vietnamese government officials at the central and provincial levels, including those from the five Red River Delta localities of Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh and Quang Ninh.
The event was intended to enhance awareness relative to the critical vulnerability of the Red River Delta and call for more relevant investment for the region, particularly at the whole-of-delta level.
Addressing the event, US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius expressed his impression of the Vietnamese Government’s stated commitments to address climate change.
These efforts include the implementation of the National Target Programme to Respond to Climate Change, the National Climate Change Strategy, the Vietnam Green Growth Strategy, and the submission of Vietnam’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution at the Paris Conference of Parties late last year, he said, affirming this dedication is critical to build a climate resilient and low emission Vietnam, including the Red River Delta.
The first Red River Delta Symposium, organised in 2014 in Nam Dinh, offered the five coastal provinces the first-time opportunity to discuss the common challenges they all face and the need for coordinated responses at the delta-level.
Since then, USAID’s Vietnam Forests and Deltas programme has supported updated provincial climate change action plans, which were shared at the second symposium.-VNA
