The northern mountainous province of Ha Giang reported that the recent hail storms, the biggest ever seen in the area, have caused total losses of over 30 billion VND (1.42 million USD).

According to the provincial Steering Committee for Storm and Flood Prevention and Control, as of 9pm on April 2, the storms that occurred in early morning of March 27 and 31 injured four people, destroyed several dozens of houses and damaged 1,250 others as well as thousands of hectares of rice and food crops.

The hardest hit districts are Hoang Su Phin, Xin Man, Vi Xuyen, Bac Quang, Quang Binh, Dong Van and Meo Vac.

Hundreds of soldiers have been sent to the affected localities to help locals, mostly from minority ethnic groups, rebuild their houses.

Families with damaged houses are provided with 3-5 million VND each to buy roof tiles, while schools are repaired to ensure pupils can continue their study.

The provincial People’s Committee directed the districts to provide farmers with seeds and send agricultural officials to guide locals in restoring their crops.

The local flood and storm control committee has been on duty around the clock to timely handle arising problems and surmount storm aftermaths, said Nguyen Duc Vinh, Head of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development cum standing vice chairman of the committee.-VNA
