Halal standards – a challenge for Vietnamese businesses

The Halal market, catering to Muslim consumers, holds vast potential in terms of scale, population, spending power, and industry diversity. It presents a promising opportunity for Vietnam’s export sectors, particularly agriculture. However, strict Halal standards make it a challenging market for Vietnamese agricultural products.

This company has been engaged in the Halal market since 2018-2019. It has undertaken substantial changes across its entire production process, from cultivation to certification, to meet Halal requirements.

Only around 20 Vietnamese products are currently exported to the Halal market. Despite its agricultural strengths, food production capacity, and extensive free trade agreements, Vietnam’s presence in the global Halal market does not yet fully reflect its potential.

Halal standards require that the preparation process adheres to Islamic guidelines, ensuring integrity, safety, and hygiene throughout the supply chain. Although exporting Halal products can be challenging, it becomes feasible if businesses meet these regulations.

Vietnam is one of the world’s leading exporters of agricultural and seafood products, many of which align well with Muslim consumer needs. Its proximity to major Halal markets further strengthens its position. As Halal standards continue to expand across product categories, they will increasingly influence Vietnamese exports and services./.
