A ceremony praying for national prosperity and world peace was held in Hanoi on May 10, as part of the 2014 United Nations Vesak Day in the country.

The event was graced by the presence Buddhist teachers His Holiness Gyalwang Drukpa, His Eminence Gyalwang Dokhampa and thousands of Buddhists from home and abroad.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Foreign Minister and Chairman of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Nguyen Thanh Son said it commemorates generations of people around the world who laid down their lives for national construction and defence.

Standing Vice Chairman and General Secretary of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha’s Executive Board Most Venerable Thich Thien Nhon vowed to unite Buddhists all over the nation to safeguard peace and territorial integrity for a fair and civilised society.

Drukpa credited the Vesak Day with encouraging the Buddhist community to make the world a better place based on Buddha’s teachings.-VNA
