More than 200 domestic and foreign scientists joined together in a conference in Hanoi on May 5 to discuss the Dien Bien Phu victory which helped Vietnam end French colonial rule 60 years ago.

At the event, participants highlighted the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, late President Ho Chi Minh and General Vo Nguyen Giap for the success of the campaign.

They concurred that the Dien Bien Phu victory affirmed the will of Vietnam’s revolutionary forces and the country’s military capability of protecting national territorial integrity.

They also concluded that the victory contributed to promoting international cooperation between Vietnam and other countries as well as asserting the country’s position in the international arena.

Dr. Nguyen Van Nhat, Director of the Vietnam’s Institute of History, also underlined the significance of the victory for Vietnam’s revolutionary process afterwards.

Attendees said the success also helped create a great change in Southeast Asia and the world as it opened a new period in the national liberation movement in many countries, especially in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

On the occasion, Dr. Annatoly Sokolov from the Institute of Oriental Studies under the Russia Academy of Sciences, introduced participants to new documents and videos by Russian filmmakers on the victory and the restoration of peace in Vietnam’s northern region.-VNA
