Breeding dairy cows is one of the few economic activities in Hanoi’s rural areas that have yielded stable profit over the past few years.

This was the assessment made by Deputy Director of the Hanoi Husbandry Development Centre Nguyen Ngoc Son at a recent workshop in the capital on enhancing dairy productivity via application advanced breeding technology.

Son noted that more than 3,000 farmers in Hanoi are engaged in dairy farming, raising over 12,000 milk cows. The cow herd is expected to increase to 25,000 by 2020.

The city has zoned 12 major dairy-cow raising areas in the rural districts of Ba Vi, Quoc Oai, Dan Phuong, Gia Lam, Dong Anh and Phuc Tho.

As only 10 percent of the local milk cows are purebred, it is necessary to apply modern technology in breeding, Son suggested.

Participants also shared experiences in technology transfer in cow breeding and farming management.-VNA
