The Vietnamese capital city of Hanoi and the Japanese prefecture of Fukuoka have agreed to enhance cooperation in environmental protection and management.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in Hanoi on Oct. 11 by Vice Chairman of the Hanoi Municipal People’s Committee Phi Thai Binh and Fukuoka Governor Wataru Aso.

Under the MoU, prioritised areas of the two sides’ cooperation include development of institutions and policies on environmental protection and management, management of water surface’ quality and river basins as well as treatment of liquid and solid waste.

The two sides are ready to share information and news on technologies in areas of mutual concern and experiences relating to environmental protection. Priorities will be given to human resource development projects, education to raise awareness on environment, and exchanges among companies and researchers to improve the environment, the MoU said.

Immediately, Hanoi asked Fukuoka to pick up one of the above-said contents to carry out later this month, effectively implementing the agreement on enhancement of friendship and cooperation between the two sides signed in Fukuoka in 2009./.
