A regional conference on ASEAN countries’ participation in UnitedNations peacekeeping operations was co-organised by the foreignministries of Vietnam and the Republic of Korea in Hanoi on July 3.
Theevent brought together researchers, scholars from ASEAN membercountries and the RoK, and representatives from the Hanoi-basedembassies of ASEAN nations and partners.
Deputy Foreign MinisterHa Kim Ngoc affirmed that Vietnam’s participation in UN peacekeepingoperations showed the consistent policy of supporting and standing readyto contribute to protecting peace in the region and the world byVietnam as a responsible member of the UN and the internationalcommunity.
The involvement is aimed to realise Vietnam’s externalpolicy of independence, self-reliance, peace, cooperation anddevelopment, multilateralisation and diversification of internationalrelations as well as the Party’s guidelines on internationalintegration, Ngoc said, adding that it will help raise the country’sposition and say in solving international issues.
Taking part inUN peacekeeping activities is a new area for Vietnam though it hasprepared for the work, including a national legal framework, since 2005.
TheMinistry of Foreign Affairs is working with other ministries andsectors in drafting a National Assembly resolution on Vietnam’sinvolvement in UN peacekeeping activities.
Focusing on nationallegal framework and experience and implications for Vietnam,participants heard practices from ASEAN countries and the RoK, which areexpected to help Vietnamese agencies and researchers to make the draftNA resolution.-VNA
