Hanoi (VNA) – Hanoi recorded 95 people contracting dengue fever between the beginning of 2018 and May 13, much lower than the same period last year.

The figure was released by the municipal Health Department, which warned humidity, heat and rains in summer are favourable for the growth of mosquitoes.

The department urged localities to be proactive in carrying out anti-mosquito measures to curb the disease.

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito, with no specific vaccine and treatment established to date.

By contrast, the period saw 356 cases diagnosed with hand-foot-mouth disease, reflecting an annual increase in number.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common viral illness that usually affects infants and children younger than five. However, it can sometimes occur in older children and adults. There is no vaccine to protect against the virus.

The Hanoi Health Department recommended local authorities pay more attention to vaccination work and monitoring the developments of the disease, along other diseases, including rubella, whooping cough, and Japanese encephalitis.-VNA
