Vietnam is to honour 100 blood donors on June 12 in response to the World Blood Donor Day’s this year message “New Blood for the World”.

Vietnam Red Cross Association Chairman Dr Tran Ngoc Tang, who is also Permanent Deputy Head of the National Steering Board on Blood Donors, said at a press briefing on June 11 that the event is the culmination of a series of practical celebrations of the gift of blood, that will take place from June 9-15.

Vietnam has collected an average of 632,902 units of blood every year, of which 79 percent come in donations. The amount, however, meets just 40 percent of demand.

The country has witnessed an increasing trend for blood donations, which have saved thousands of patients. It is reported that thousands of volunteers have donated blood for more than 20 times, dozens of families have had their members enthusiastically take part in the movement and hundreds of agencies, schools and enterprises have regularly held blood-giving events.

The Hanoi major streets are colourfully decorated with posters and slogans calling for “New Blood, for You and for Me” and “Donating Blood to Save lives, Please Don’t Hesitate” in celebration of the World Blood Donor Day which falls on June 14./.
