Hanoi authorities on October 4 opened an exhibition on the socio-economic and cultural achievements that the capital has recorded over the past six decades.

The event forms part of activities celebrating the 60th anniversary of Hanoi ’s Liberation Day (October 10).

Speaking at the exhibition, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen The Thao, said since the liberation day, the capital has joined hands with other localities nationwide in national construction and defence.

He said the city has overcome a range of difficulties and challenges to reap significant fruits in various areas from politics to economics, culture and social affairs.

He highlighted the fact that from a small city with a 400,000 population, Hanoi has grown into a giant and modern metropolis with a total area of 3,328 sq.km and a population of over 7 million people.

The city accounts for over 10 percent of the national gross domestic product (GDP) and 20 percent of the State budget, he noted.

During the time of the exhibition, visitors will have a chance to meet historic witnesses who have accompanied the city’s development over the past time.

The event will run until October 12.-VNA
