Hanoi (VNA) – Residents in several areas of the capital Hanoi, including Ba Dinh, Tay Ho, Hoan Kiem, and Dong Da districts, might face water shortages this summer, said the municipal Department of Construction.

The department warned demand for tap water would increase by 12 percent during hot weather and a water shortage is expected to reach 60,000 cubic meters per day.

The situation may be acute when a major pipeline supplying 27 percent of the city’s total water volume, taken from the Da River in Hoa Binh province, is likely to experience other breakdowns. The pipeline has broken down 17 times since 2012.
Meanwhile, the second pipeline, whose construction started in October 2015, cannot be put into operation for this summer as planned.

Currently, water plants in the city are providing about 900,000 cubic meters per day and plan to add 66,000 cubic metres more to the whole supply system per day during May.

The department has asked water plants to carry out technical measures to limit losses, while working with relevant bodies to deploy regular water quality monitoring and supervising works.

On the other hand, the plants need to develop Plan B to ensure adequate water supply in case of any possible water pipeline breakdowns.-VNA
