A waste sorting project to promote environmental protection project in Hanoi - 3R (reduce-reuse-recycle) HN - will try to reduce buried waste in the capital city to 30 percent by 2015 and 70 percent by 2020.

Launched in 2006, the project was implemented in a pilot model in Lang Ha, Thanh Cong, Phan Chu Trinh and Nguyen Du wards.

It will be implemented on large scale in Tay Ho, Cau Giay, Thanh Xuan, Hoang Mai, Long Bien districts and several communes of Tu Liem, Gia Lam, Thanh Tri, Dong Anh and Soc Son urban districts.

Funded by the Japanese government, the project has helped mitigate buried waste, improve environmental hygiene in the project sites, particularly raise city dwellers’ awareness on sorting their trash before putting it for collection.

According to Hisashi Yamauchi, head of JICA 3R-Hanoi project, the pilot phase in four wards achieved good results, winning support of local authorities and community, especially the young people./.
