The Hanoi People's Committee and Hanoi Clean Water Supply Company began upgrading the Bac Thang Long-Van Tri water plant in Dong Anh district on October 23.

The upgrade aims to add about 30,000 cu.m of water per day to the plant, helping it operate at its planned capacity of 50,000 cu.m per day, Nguyen Bao Vinh, Director of the company, said.

The project, expected to be completed in six months with a total investment of more than 152 billion VND (6.9 million USD), will process water from the Hong (Red) River. It is part of a roadmap for reducing the use of groundwater.

Ever since the plant, built with a Japanese government loan, became operational in 2007, its water level has fallen sharply due to falling groundwater levels.

Along with this project, the company is preparing to build another water plant that will use the water of the Hong River in Dan Phuong district, at 300,000 cu.m a day.

The total capacity of the water supply plants in Hanoi is 900,000 cu.m per day, but they still fail to meet the demand, especially in summer.-VNA
