The Hanoi Plant Varieties Centre has been assigned to build and put into action a joint project to grow rice in Mozambique .

Nguyen Ba Suong, the centre’s director, reported on Oct. 6 that the centre will work with the relevant agencies to launch the project as soon as possible.

The project is expected to help double or triple rice production and improve the Mozambican people’s living conditions. Vietnam may also send farmers and workers to Mozambique to grow rice and do business.

The project is a tri-partite cooperation programme between Vietnam , Mozambique and Japan and a bilateral cooperation programme between Hanoi and the Mozambican Agriculture Ministry.

The programme will gradually satisfy the country’s food demands and provide rice to export to the rest of Africa in the future.

Under the bilateral programme, Hanoi will send agricultural specialists to Mozambique to instruct in cultivating techniques, provide seeds and help farmers to harvest the rice./.
