The consumer price index (CPI) in Hanoi in 2010 rose 9.56 percent over 2009, fuelled by a rise of 1.83 percent in December.

In December, the food and food-related services had the highest rise of 3.27 percent, while the group of housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials rose by 2.86 percent.

Prices of post and telecommunications services remained unchanged, but commodities like transport, footwear, headwear, drinks and cigarettes, home equipment and appliances increased slightly, by 1 percent.

Economists attributed the CPI rise this year mainly to surging prices of input materials and a high USD/VND exchange rate and also mentioned the growing consumption demand during the year-end months in preparation for the traditional lunar new year festival.

In December, the price of gold soared 5.4 percent over November and 37.02 percent year on year; the price of the US dollar rose 3.44 percent over November and 7.44 percent from 2009./.
