Ho Chi Minh City people will make further efforts to foster and strengthen the special friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Laos.
Phan Xuan Bien, President of Ho Chi Minh City’s Vietnam- Laos Friendship Association, made the statement at a get-together marking Laos ’ 36 th National Day (Dec. 2, 1975- 2011) in HCM City on Nov. 30.
He highlighted the significance of the multi-faceted cooperation between Ho Chi Minh City and its two Lao sister localities of Vientiane and Champasak in specific fields, including agriculture, education, labour training, banking, culture, tourism and sports.
He congratulated the Lao people on their significant achievements made during the path of building Laos into a peaceful, independent, democratic, united and prosperous socialist-oriented country.
Lao Consul General in HCM City Southideth Phommalat stressed that the “Vietnam- Laos Friendship Year” 2012 is greatly significant for the two countries’ relations. During the year, the two sides will jointly carry out numerous activities.
Vietnam is one of the largest investors in Laos with 258 projects totalling over 3.3 billion USD. In the first eight months of 2011, Vietnamese businesses registered investment worth 469 million USD in Laos .
Vietnam is also the third largest trade partner of Laos with two-way trade reaching 490 million USD in 2010 and expected to hit 800 million USD this year./.
