HCM City (VNA) – The Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organisations (HUFO) and the Vietnam – Cuba Friendship Association’s chapter in Ho Chi Minh City held a get-together in the city on May 10 to mark the 57th anniversary of Cuba’s Giron Victory (1961-2018).

At the function, delegates stressed the historical significance of Giron Victory 57 years ago, when more than 1,500 US-trained mercenary troops landed at Giron beach as part of a scheme to overthrow the fledgling Cuban government. Under the direct command of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, the invasion was defeated on April 19, 1961 after less than 72 hours.

The Giron Victory marked a decisive turning point that advanced Cuba to a path of socialism building, they said.

Cuban Consul General to Ho Chi Minh City Indira Lopez Arguelles shared that the victory was not only significant for the struggle for national independence of the Cuban people but also a great encouragement for national liberation movements throughout the world, including in Vietnam.

Despite far geographic distance, the Vietnamese and Cuban people have always stood side by side and supported each other in the past national liberation as well as the current national construction, she noted.

The time-tested friendship between Vietnam and Cuba, founded by late Presidents Ho Chi Minh and Fidel Castro and fostered by generations of both sides’ leaders and people, is thriving and has become a model relationship in the world, she added.-VNA
