HCM City (VNA) – The People’s Committee of District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City will start to pilot food vending in several streets from the middle of April 2016.

The plan aims to ensure social welfare and address the street encroachment of some business households.

The piloted areas include Le Van Chiem Street and Bach Dang Port Park on Ton Duc Thang Street.

Street vendors will be allowed to work between 6:00 am and 8:00 am in the morning and 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the afternoon, serving breakfast and lunch for customers.

It is estimated that nearly 600 households in District 1 are encroaching on streets to do business.

Vice Chairwoman of the district’s People’s Committee Nguyen Thi Thu Huong said the project will prioritise disadvantaged households – which could be around 50-60 in the piloted area.

Authorities will raise the street vendors’ awareness of food hygiene and safety, selling skills, good behaviour, environmental protection and waste treatment, she added.

After one month, the district will review the outcome and expand the model if it proves effective.-VNA
