HCM City (VNA) – A conference on overseas Vietnamese (OV) affairs was held in Ho Chi Minh City on December 24, offering a chance for OVs around the world to give opinions to the city on how to improve the efficiency of the work.

Addressing the event, Ambassador Luong Thanh Nghi, Vice Chairman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ State Committee on OV Affairs said that currently, there are about 5.3 million Vietnamese people living in 130 countries and territories across the globe.

A majority of overseas Vietnamese have legal status and stable life, and well integrate into the host society. They have also helped foster Vietnam’s relationships with the countries.

Wherever they are, they always look toward the homeland, becoming an indispensable part of the Vietnamese nation and an important resource to contribute to the cause of national construction and development. With the country’s increasingly improved position and prestige on international arena, their trust has been more and more reinforced.

The majority of them have settled down with firm legal status, well intergrating into the host country’s society, and helping foster Vietnam’s relationships with the countries.

He underlined that OVs across the world have looked toward the homeland by contributing their brainpower and resources to the country.

Nghi stressed the need to pay greater attention to OV affairs, thus promoting resources from the community for the national development.

According to Nghi, the 13th National Party Congress’ Resolution affirmed the need to expand the network of Vietnamese talents with the engagement of Vietnamese scientists abroad, and design specific programmes to attract the involvement of Vietnamese and foreign people abroad.

The Party and State have also focused on reinforcing the great national unity bloc and showing the responsibility in caring for Vietnamese community abroad and optimise resources from the community, he noted.

Participants at the event hailed the Party and State’s efforts in encouraging and creating favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community abroad to participate in activities in economic, social and cultural areas at home and developing their legal status in host country.

Representatives from the Vietnamese community abroad lauded efficiency of COVID-19 prevention and control activities in HCM City and other localities.

They expressed their hope that the Government will pay more attention to reforming administrative procedures to make it easier for OVs to invest in and contribute their brainpower to the development of the city and the country./.
