Ho Chi Minh City ’s consumer price index (CPI) in November rose by 0.55 percent over the previous month, according to the city’s Statistics Office.

The index was up 6.45 percent compared to the beginning of this year and 6 percent over the same period last year.

In November, foodstuffs and services saw increases of 1.02 percent and 1.11 percent respectively, followed by housing, electricity, water, fuel and building materials at 0.88 percent.

Others, including beverages, tobacco and telecommunications, dropped slightly.

The prices of food and foodstuffs rose from 0.14 percent to 6.24 percent mainly on products such as rice, grains, processed food, meat, eggs, cooking oil, fresh and processed seafood, fruit and sugar.

Economic experts forecast that between now and the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival, the price of food and foodstuffs will continue to climb due to unsettled weather and diseases as well as a drop in food supplies.

The gold price soared by 8.58 percent in the month while the price of the US dollar rose by 2 percent./.
