HCM City authorities have sent 1,209 homeless drug addicts to detoxification centres during a campaign to remove all drug addicts from the city’s streets.

At a December 18 meeting to review the first 12 days of the campaign, the municipal People’s Committee reported that they also sent 879 drug addicts who are adolescents, pregnant women or with stable accommodation, back to their hometown.

According to deputy director of the municipal police department Major General Phan Anh Minh, the police detected two wanted criminals among the drug addicts.

The city launched the campaign early this month to ensure security and order for the city ahead of the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival.-VNA
