The Ministry of Health on September 24 confirmed a 10th death from the A/H1N1 flu three days ago.

The 59-year old resident of the southern province of Ben Tre was hospitalised on September 16 with symptoms of coughing and breathing difficulties.

It was then found that she was suffering from end-stage renal failure due to kidney disease, pneumonia, and had had type 2 diabetes for at least 12 years. She was later moved to a major hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, the Cho Ray Hospital, for better treatment.

She passed away on September 21 after testing positive to A/H1N1 flu virus.

The ministry reported an additional 203 confirmed cases of A/H1N1 flu on September 24 alone, bringing the total number to 7,839.

The epidemic has spread to between 55 and 56 provinces, reported the ministry, adding that just a few northern mountainous provinces are still untouched by the disease.

Although the A/H1N1flu in the northern region has remained under control without any deaths reported, Dr Nguyen Van Kinh, Head of the National Contagious and Tropical Disease Institute, warned that the situation would become worse as winter, an ideal weather for the virus to develop, is approaching.

He also complained that his institute has been recently overloaded with people thinking they have caught the A/H1N1 flu and coming for a check up./.
