Party and State leaders on July 27 laid a wreath at the Monument to Heroic Martyrs in Bac Son street, Hanoi, on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of War Invalids and Fallen Soldiers’ Day (July 27).

National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong, Politburo members Truong Tan Sang and Nguyen Van Chi, Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan, Deputy Prime Ministers Pham Gia Khiem and Hoang Trung Hai, Vietnam Fatherland Front Chairman Huynh Dam, former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Le Kha Phieu, and revolutionary veterans attended the wreath-laying ceremony.

Then they paid tribute to President Ho Chi Minh –the great leader of the Vietnamese people –at his mausoleum.

In 1947, President Ho Chi Minh named July 27 as War Invalids and Fallen Soldiers’ Day, aimed to express a deep gratitude to the soldiers who sacrificed life and limbs for the nation’s independence.

The day is also a chance for the Vietnamese people and authorities to turn their thoughts toward improving living conditions of war invalids and martyrs’ relatives.

On the same day, CPV General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, who is visiting the southern province of Ba Ria Vung Tau, burnt incense to commemorate the war martyrs at a cemetery in Long Phuoc commune in Ba Ria town and presented gifts to war invalids and veterans at a local sanatorium.

State President Nguyen Minh Triet, who is on a working visit to the southern province of Tra Vinh, also met and gave presents to seven families which had contributed to the nation’s cause for independence.

The War Invalids and Fallen Soldiers’ Day was also celebrated in Germany on the same day with the attendance of about 200 Vietnamese people who are veterans, war invalids, and martyrs’ relatives./.
