A building housing the examination and high-tech treatment departments of the Hanoi-based National Geriatric Hospital was inaugurated on February 9.
The 150-bed facility, constructed over the last 14 months and meeting international standards, is able to accommodate 500 patients.
It is part of a 120 billion VND (5.7 million USD) project that will also upgrade existing facilities beginning later this month.
Upon the completion of the entire project in December of this year, the National Geriatric Hospital will have 300 inpatient beds and be capable of serving 1,000 people a day.
Speaking at the inauguration, Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien said only 40 percent of provincial hospitals nationwide have geriatric wards. According to the minister, the increasing number of non-communicable diseases is the burden of the future in one of the top ten fastest aging populations in the world.
To address this, the ministry plans to build a branch of the National Geriatric Hospital in nearby Ha Nam province providing professional examination and treatment, she said, asking the hospital to offer more intensive training to its staff and help localities nationwide build functional rehabilitation centres.-VNA
