Among the 12 animals that represent the lunar calendar, the horse is one of those most associated with the lives of ethnic people in the mountainous regions. Horse racing is also one of the unique festivals of the people there.

In a festival worshipping the Mountain God of the H’Mong ethnic community in the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai, horse racing is one of the most attractive games and an integral custom of theirs on spring days.

For them, the horse is a symbol of wealth. The race horses are usually bred carefully. Depending on the locality, the race is combined with some actions like shooting crossbows, picking up scarves or finding hidden things.

The competition does not mean to seek a winner. All horsemen will receive praise from visitors. Their awards are cups of wine, face cloths and scarves from H’Mong girls.-VNA
