As many as 250 athletes including 63 females from 24 countries and territories will compete for 10 sets of medals in billiards and snooker at the third Asian Indoor Games, which will begin in HCM City at the end of this month.

In the men’s section seven men of medals are up for grabs: individual snooker; team snooker; one-cushion carom; three-cushion carom; English billiards; six red balls; and nine-ball pool. For women, the three sets of medals are: six red balls; eight ball and nine-ball pool.

Fourteen players including four women will represent the Vietnam in all 10 events but the big hopes are pinned on one-cushion and three-cushion events. The second AIG men’s one-cushion carom singles champion and Asian Games 2006’s three-cushion carom singles silver medalist Duong Anh Vu and Asian carom 1 champion Dang Dinh Tien are the nation’s main title contenders.

However, Vu and Tien will have to face strong competition from players like 2006 gold medal Umeda Ryuuji from Japan and bronze medal Kim Kyungroul from the Republic of Korea.

The billiards and snooker contests are expected to be very competitive with many of the world’s and Asia’s leading players present, like the men’s snooker world champion Un Nooh Thepchaiya of Thailand or the 2 nd games 9-ball pool singles gold medalist Chang Shu Han of Chinese Taipei, 2006 gold medal Liu Shin Mei and World Games’ nine-ball pool’s silver medal Yang Ching Shun.

According to the draw, Dang Dinh Tien will meet Al Buainain Modh of Qatar while Cao Thanh Truc will take on another player from the same country in their opening matches.

Duong Anh Vu will face a weak opponent Goel Vijay of India in the first round while Ly The Vinh has a first round clash against Laotian Xay Sana Somchai in the three-cushion carom event.

The billiards and snooker events at the games will take place at the games will take place at Phan Dinh Phung Gymnasium in HCM City from October 31 to November 7./.
