A campaign started in the central coastal city of Nha Trang on July 12 to gather funds and support to build houses for the poor.

With the theme “houses for the poor in border and island areas,” this years campaign aims to build 2,000 houses and 50 public facilities for poor people in 18 cities and provinces in the central and central highlands region.

The campaign is part of a range of activities to celebrate party congresses at all levels and the 11th national congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

The campaign was initiated by the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, the Border Guards High Command and the People’s Army newspaper in 2008. Since then, it has collected nearly 80 billion VND (roughly 4.16 million USD) and millions of voluntary work days from the public and border guards.

During the campaign, more than 3,660 houses have been built for poor people in border areas and on the country’s islands, at a total cost of over 150 billion VND.

At a workshop the same day, representatives from the participating cities and provinces discussed the opportunities and challenges as well as ways of making the campaign a success in each locality./.
