Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in conjunction with Germany’s Ministry of the Environment held a seminar on Germany’s experiences in dealing with land pollution, in Hanoi on May 15.

The seminar was an opportunity for policy-makers and specialists from both countries to exchange information and discuss ways of treating polluted land areas in Vietnam .

German experts also explained how to draw up maps of polluted land areas using digital technology. This kind of mapping gives a much clearer picture of the affected areas and is a much simpler process.

According to the General Department of Land Management, northern Vietnam ’s key economic zones, including seven cities and provinces of Hanoi , Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Vinh Phuc and Bac Ninh have almost exhausted their natural resources, especially land, minerals, water and energy. They are also dealing with huge levels of many different types of waste including sewage, exhaust fumes and general rubbish. This affects their natural resources badly and pollutes the environment even more .

The ministry said it is necessary to set up a nationwide plan to protect the environment in and around key economic zones and reduce the impacts of socio-economic development plans. It also proposed solutions for using natural resources more effectively.-VNA
