Human Rights Council’s UPR Working Group adopts report on Vietnam

The UPR working group of the UN Human Rights Council adopted a preliminary report on the third review of Vietnam at a session at the UN headquarters in Geneva on January 25.

Geneva,  (VNA) – The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) working group of the UN Human Rights Council adopted a preliminary report onthe third review of Vietnam at a session at the UN headquarters in Geneva onJanuary 25.

The report included 291recommendations made by 122 countries, covering a wide range of scopes such asbuilding a law-governed State, completing the legal system, continuing topromote basic rights and freedom, and enhancing cooperation with human rightsmechanisms of the UN.

Countries also called on Vietnamto share its experiences in ensuring the rights of disadvantaged groups,eliminating hunger and reducing poverty, universalizing education, ensuringsocial welfare and creating employment.

Most recommendations are inaccordance with Vietnam’s priorities and commitments in protecting andpromoting human rights.  

Addressing the session, DeputyForeign Minister Le Hoai Trung appreciated the cooperative and constructivespirit of countries and their positive assessment on Vietnam’s nationalconstruction and human rights protection and promotion.

Trung affirmed that Vietnam willcarefully study the recommendations in order to decide on the acceptance or acknowledgementof received recommendations, in line with the HRC’s regulations, procedures andpractices, so as to ensure the full and effective implementation of thoserecommendations in the future.

The report on the third UPR of Vietnamwill be considered for official approval at the 41st regular sessionof the HCR scheduled for June this year.

The 32nd meeting ofthe UN Human Rights Council’s UPR Working Group is taking place from January 21 to February1, looking into human right performance at 14 UN member countries, includingVietnam. The Vietnamese delegation to the session was led by Deputy ForeignMinister Le Hoai Trung.-VNA
